History
Jeff Gordon's 1991 winning USAC Silver Crown Championship car.
This United States Auto Club (USAC) Silver Crown car design was originally built in the winter of 1989 by John Bickford, Bob East (Beast Chassis), and Andy Graves. It raced during the 89-90 seasons and had multiple wins and set multiple track qualifying records. The car held the Indianapolis Raceway Park qualifying record for 15 years. When originally created its innovative design and features were four years ahead of it's time and the competition. The chassis design was used on all future Beast Silver Crown cars.
When Bob East first met Jeff Gordon, Bob wanted Jeff to be his new driver. In May, 1989 Jeff Gordon drove in "The Night Before the 500" which is a huge midget race at Indiana Raceway Park. It's hosted at a bullring oval down the road from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It's a race that runs ahead of the famed Indy 500. Jeff drove for his first race with a new team, set a new track record, won his heat race and then won the race. Gordon went on to claim the USAC Midget Rookie of the Year award.
This 1991 Silver Crown Car was driven by Jeff Gordon at Phoenix International Raceway 100 Mile -a win. (Jeff's first race in Silver Crown Car on pavement); Indiana State Fairgrounds 100 mile win (Jeff's first race in Silver Crown Car on dirt); Jeff finished 4th at DuQuoin, IL and wins USAC season championship. His Silver Crown success opened the NASCAR door and the rest is racing history for Jeff Gordon
